PIXELOPTICS UNVEILS emPOWER

On March 19, 2010 at the International Vision Expo in New York City, PixelOptics unveiled the world's first electronic eye glasses. After more than ten years and an investment of millions, PixelOptics has produced a product that can auto focus faster than the blink of a human eye. The company is scheduled to launch their newest product in test markets beginning in October and hopes to bring the high end product to the public in 2011. HCRI MAKES HEADLINES WITH NEW RESEARCH AND THERAPY TOOL

HCRI has developed an application
which could be used as a therapy
tool on an Apple iPhone.

In the past few months, Hollins Communications Research Institute has received a great deal of local media coverage from Valley BusinessFront, WDBJ 7 and The Roanoke Times. The reason why is twofold:

(1) HCRI Scientists have developed a voice monitoring application/therapy tool for use on the Apple iPod Touch and iPhone. Currently, HCRI is in negotiations with Apple. For more information click on, www.roanoke.com or see Wellness Front @ www.vbfront.com.

(2) The New England Journal of Medicine will publish research indicating a genetic link to stuttering which would support that stuttering is a biological disorder. STARTING A BUSINESS IN ROANOKE COUNTY

Roanoke County's Economic Development Department has developed a Start A Business information resource guide for entrepreneurs or first time business owners. This guide provides recommendations for first steps that need to be addressed on the local, state and national levels. It also provides reference links for business owners who require special information for their respective companies.

This reference also helps to answer the following sample questions. Do you know what your leasehold improvement clause means in your commercial lease? Are you aware that your employees cannot come to your home based business for meetings? If you are buying an existing business, will it require a rezoning or change of use? Is there a tax advantage to operating my business out of my home? What are the benefits of leasing vs. buying an existing building? Does purchasing a building for my business increase the value of my business?

TAMEA WOODWARD NAMED TO
GOVERNOR'S MANUFACTURING ADVISORY COUNCIL

Tamea Woodward has been named to the Governor's Manufacturing Advisory Council. The council serves as liaison between the Governor's office and manufacturing entities in Virginia. THE LAMB'S COTTAGE CELEBRATES OPENING
WITH A RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONY

On Wednesday, April 14th, a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony with Roanoke County Supervisor Charlotte Moore and Chairman of the Board, Butch Church, was held at The Lamb's Cottage located at 3224 Brambleton Avenue. The business carries a variety of merchandise from lamb items to antiques. Formerly, Mrs. Doughton had a booth in Two Peas and a Pod in Vinton. THE GRAND OPENING OF FAITH'S HAIR STUDIO

On Thursday, April 15th, a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony was held with Mayor Bradley Grose and Vinton Chamber President Sabrina Weeks officiating. The event was held at Faith's Hair Studio located at 206 South Pollard Street in Vinton. Faith Greene is owner and head stylist and a member of the Star City Roller Girls.

FREE SEMINAR FOR EMERGENCY PLANNING

The Roanoke Valley Emergency Planning Committee (RVEPC) will host a free seminar on business continuity planning. No one expects a disaster to affect their business operations until after it happens. Disasters do not have to be the scale of Hurricane Katrina or 9/11, it could simply be a power-outage, fire, or localized flooding. No business is immune to threat. The RVEPC is pleased to host this free seminar at the Jefferson Center on May 17.

INNOVATION AND LINKED-IN

This Roanoke County Business Partners program will showcase two businesses with technological innovations in the sight and speaking/hearing fields. The final segment will reveal how one business uses Linked-In for business client recruitment.

William Spies, Chief Operating Officer at PixelOptics, will discuss and demonstrate the company's new technology entitled emPower which incorporates an auto-focus faster than the blink of an eye for correcting "near focus" problems that affect many persons in middle age. This cutting edge product is the world's first electronic glasses with electronics in the frames and crystals in the lenses for focus adjustments.

Dr. Ronald Webster, Founder of Hollins Communications Research Institute, will share how the institute has developed a computer program that measures speech fluency. The institute has also developed an application for Apple's iPhone. In addition, for the first time researchers are reporting in the New England Journal of Medicine that a genetic link to stuttering has been uncovered which is further proof for the Hollins Communications Research Institute that stuttering is a biological disorder.
