ALI KHAN: A ROLE MODEL IN LEADERSHIP

After 26 years at the helm of Precision Fabrics Group in Vinton, Ali Khan actually embraced the “R” word. Well
almost, although his official “retirement” as Plant Manager was October 1, 2009, he will still be involved on a
consultant basis with the plant in 2010.
What did Ali Khan do to keep the only textile mill in Roanoke County competitive and located in Vinton into the 21st
century? He did his homework and diversified the plants’ products. The PFG plant transformed from a typewriter ribbon
manufacturer to a performance materials manufacturer. Performance materials are used by engineers in clean rooms, doctors
and surgical staff in the O.R., by the aviation industry in aircraft design and in the uniforms of our troops. Ali is one
of those rare individuals who has the vision and knows how to use this ability in dealing with bricks and mortar, human
resources and technology. He is a change agent who understands the altering nature of his industry. PFG’s Vinton Plant
specializes in weaving some of the most technically challenging fine-denier fabrics in the world.
Ali is passionate about what he does and the people with whom he works. A pet project of his was incorporating
recycling projects to protect the environment and save money. This passion has also resulted in the company planting
1,100 hardwood trees in 2007 on the front lawn to help improve water quality in Tinker Creek. In the past decade, PFG
underwent an “internal expansion” that did not require bricks and mortar but created space for new high tech
looms that significantly reduced the use of water causing the plant to be labeled as a state of the art shuttleless weaving
facility. To tour the plant with Ali would show his involvement with his employees. He would call each employee by name
or nod as he passed in the high decibel weaving area. If time allowed, he stopped for a few personal words, questions
about the job or the employee’s family.
Ali Khan is an incredibly talented, hard working gentleman with a vision and we are grateful for his leadership at
Precision Fabrics Group and in our community.
Thank you, Ali, for making a difference.

THE BUSINESS FORUM OWNERSHIP THINKING: THE BUSINESS MODEL FOR THE 21st CENTURY
Presenter: Brad Hams Tuesday, February 16, 2010 Roanoke Higher Education Center Room 212 8:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
As a business owner you have probably agonized over the question, Why can’t everyone see what I see? Why can’t my employees see the issues I see? Owners are focused on the company: sales, cash, profitability. Employees tend to focus on “me”: compensation, benefits, job security. Ownership Thinking is a proven process that will move your employees from “me” to “us”, creating a better work environment and improved financial performance. Companies practicing Ownership Thinking financially outperform their competitors by 30 %. This educational event is open to the general public. Call (540) 767-6100 for additional information and to register.

THE 2010 CENSUS IS IMPORTANT
It determines the distribution of more than $300 billion annually
of government funding for critical community services. It generates
thousands of jobs across the country. And it impacts your voice in
Congress.
A Complete Count: The Importance of Census Data
- Businesses use demographic and economic census data to
locate retail stores, new housing and other facilities.
- Every year, the federal government can allocate more than $300
billion to states and communities based, in part, on census data.
- Census data guide local decision-makers on where to build new
roads, hospitals, housing, schools and more.
- Census data determine representation in the U.S. House of
Representatives and in state and local governments.
YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
As an influential business leader, you can raise awareness of and encourage participation in this historic event. With your help, the Census Bureau will continue
to produce accurate data, which will directly affect the quality of life in your community.

RVTV's ROANOKE COUNTY BUSINESS PARTNERS

The Roanoke County Comprehensive Plan is a blueprint for the future growth and development of the County over the next 10-15 years. It provides direction and guidance, for both the public and private sectors, in making decisions about land development, public services and resource protection. This Plan allows decision makers to study the long-term consequences of current decisions and recognize that today’s actions will impact the County for many years to come. Our show will examine three plans of the future blueprint and discuss impacts on the business community.
