ELMER HODGE RETIRES
Elmer and Sue Hodge are interviewed by local television stations
following his retirement announcement at the Board of Supervisors meeting.
On March 5th, Roanoke County Administrator, Elmer C. Hodge, Jr., formally announced his plans to retire
effective July 1, 2008. Hodge was appointed County Administrator in November 1985 and quickly got to work
helping Roanoke County recover from the worst flood in the County’s history. Since that time, Hodge
has continued to earn praise as a diligent and forward-thinking leader who has achieved much and reached
out to neighboring localities.
Recently, Roanoke County received one of the highest bond ratings in the state in preparation for a
series of recently approved capital projects. These projects include a new South County Library, a fleet
maintenance facility to maintain county and water authority vehicles, a new North County Fire and Rescue
Station, an upgrade of the county’s emergency radio system, and a Multi-Generational Recreation
Center which will anchor a new international-quality business park. Developing a business park at the
intersection of I-81 and I-581 has been a longtime goal for Hodge. Currently, construction is well
underway on a new regional jail that is a partnership of four localities spanning the Roanoke and the New
River valleys. Construction will begin soon on a waterline that will extend public water from Clearbrook
into Franklin County. Taken together, these projects link the region together from Virginia Tech to Smith
Mountain Lake.
In an e-mail announcing his retirement to county staff, Hodge summed up his experiences with Roanoke County,
writing that “We have taken on tough issues and have accomplished great things with the help of our
citizens, the business community, and neighboring localities. It has truly been an honor to work with such
a wonderful group of people.”
