Roanoke, Va. (May 22, 2009)— Neil D. Wilkin, Jr., President and CEO of Optical Cable Corporation (Nasdaq GM: OCCF) received the NewVa Leadership Award for 2009 at the annual TechNite gala hosted by the NewVa Corridor Technology Council.
As President and CEO, Wilkin has successfully led Optical Cable Corporation to become the second largest manufacturer of multimode fiber optic cable for the enterprise market in North America; the premier manufacturer of military ground tactical fiber optic cable for the U.S. military and Allied Forces; and the only company in the world to offer a qualified ground tactical cable with a US and UK approval.
Wilkin directed the installation of a comprehensive enterprise resource planning (ERP) software solution for long term growth strategy and created a scalable business model for the company and, along with his management team clarified the company’s focus on market segments in the mining, broadcast, industrial, oil/gas/petrochemical and security/intrusion industries. Now citizens in the Roanoke Region can observe Optical Cable’s success when watching a PGA tournament, NFL sky cam video or a Formula One race.
Under Wilkin’s direction, Optical Cable Corporation has received nine certifications, recognitions, and awards from the US Department of Defense, US Military, US Department of Commerce, US Patent Office, Roanoke Branch of NAACP, Commonwealth of Virginia, Start-it Magazine, and the Blue Ridge Business Journal. The company is now internationally recognized for pioneering the design and production of fiber optic cables for the most demanding military field applications, as well as of fiber optic cables suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, and creating a broad product offering built on the evolution of these fundamental technologies. With the acquisition of SMP Data Communications in May 2008, the Company is now also internationally recognized for its role in establishing copper connectivity data communications standards, through its innovative and patented technologies.
Wilkin is a graduate of the University of Virginia School Of Law, the McIntire School of Commerce, and the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia. He currently serves on the boards of the Virginia Economic Development Partnership, Virginia Western Community College Educational Foundation, and the NewVa Corridor Technology Council. He is a member of the Business Council and the Young Presidents Organization.
